The half-reaction method balances redox equations by splitting the overall reaction into an oxidation half and a reduction half. Each half is balanced first for all atoms except oxygen and hydrogen, then oxygen is balanced by adding water and hydrogen by adding H+ ions in acidic solution. Charge is balanced by adding electrons, and the half-reactions are multiplied so that the electrons gained and lost are equal before they are added together. Species common to both sides are cancelled to give the final balanced equation. The method is reliable for complex reactions in aqueous solution.
Key ideas: Steps: split into oxidation and reduction half-reactions; balance atoms other than O and H; balance O with H2O; balance H with H+; balance charge with electrons; multiply to equalize electrons; add and cancel. Always check final atoms and charge. For Fe2+ with MnO4- in acid the ratio is 5 Fe2+ per MnO4-.
Common mistakes and connections: Frequent errors: adding H+ before balancing O, putting electrons on the wrong side, and not equalizing electrons before adding. Mismatched charge at the end signals a mistake. Do not change subscripts. The method is the basis for balancing in acidic and basic media and for finding stoichiometry in redox titrations.
The balanced equation MnO4- + 5Fe2+ + 8H+ gives Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O; the coefficients show five electrons lost per iron and gained per manganese. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.
For permanganate oxidizing iron(II) in acid, the balanced equation is MnO4- + 5Fe2+ + 8H+ -> Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O.
