In-depth explanation of Standard Solutions

A standard solution is one whose concentration is known accurately, which is essential for quantitative methods such as titration where results depend directly on the reagent concentration. Such a solution can be prepared by weighing a primary standard of known purity and dissolving it to a precise volume. Solutions that cannot be weighed directly, such as sodium hydroxide, which absorbs water and carbon dioxide from air, must be standardized by titrating them against a primary standard. Standardization converts an approximate concentration into an accurate one, and the standardized value is used in all later calculations. The uncertainty of the standard propagates directly into the uncertainty of the final result.

Going deeper: Standard Solutions

Key ideas: To prepare, weigh by difference to four decimal places, dissolve in a beaker with some solvent, transfer quantitatively with rinsings, make up to the mark, and invert to mix. For standardization, titrate three or more concordant titres (within 0.10 mL) and use the mean. Label with concentration, date and the standard used. Store alkaline solutions in plastic.

Common mistakes and connections: Mistakes include diluting to the mark before the solute dissolves fully, forgetting to rinse the weighing vessel into the flask, and leaving NaOH solution open to air so its concentration drifts. Using an approximate concentration in calculations without standardizing gives systematic error. Relates to primary standards, titration, serial dilution and uncertainty propagation.

Visualization of Standard Solutions

Standardizing NaOH by titrating weighed potassium hydrogen phthalate (pKa 5.41) gives a sharp equivalence point that fixes the base concentration accurately. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

A NaOH solution is standardized by titrating a weighed sample of KHP to its endpoint.
