In-depth explanation of Molar Mass

Molar mass, symbol M, is the mass of one mole of a substance in grams per mole, and it is numerically equal to the relative formula mass. It is found by summing the standard atomic masses of all the atoms in the formula. Molar mass is the key conversion factor in stoichiometry, because moles equal mass divided by molar mass. It should be distinguished from molecular mass, which is the mass of one molecule in atomic mass units. Molar masses are calculated from the periodic table and are used in nearly every quantitative laboratory calculation.

Going deeper: Molar Mass

Key ideas: Molar mass M (g per mol) is the sum of atomic masses in the formula, e.g. Ca(OH)2 = 40.08 + 2 x 16.00 + 2 x 1.008 = 74.10 g per mol. Use it to convert m = n x M. Mass percent of an element = (n x atomic mass) / M x 100.

Common mistakes and connections: Students forget to multiply by subscripts outside brackets, or confuse molar mass with molecular mass in u, which is numerically equal but dimensionally different. For hydrates, include water of crystallization. It enters every stoichiometry, empirical formula and solution calculation.

Visualization of Molar Mass

Molar mass is the mass of one mole in grams: a mole of water weighs 18.02 g while a mole of glucose weighs 180.16 g. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

For CaCO3, M = 40.08 + 12.01 + 3 x 16.00 = 100.09 g/mol, so 25.0 g of CaCO3 is about 0.250 mol.
