In-depth explanation of Work Function

The work function, symbol phi, is the minimum energy required to remove an electron from the surface of a metal into vacuum. It is related to the threshold frequency by phi = h nu0 and is usually quoted in electronvolts. Metals with low ionisation energies, such as the alkali metals, have low work functions. Materials with low work functions are used in photocells and thermionic emitters. Surface cleanliness and crystal face also affect the measured value.

Going deeper: Work Function

Key ideas: The work function phi is the minimum energy to remove an electron from a metal surface, in J or eV (1 eV = 1.602 x 10^-19 J). Typical values: Cs 2.1 eV, Na 2.3 eV, Cu 4.7 eV, Pt 5.6 eV. Lower values mean metals respond to visible light, so alkali metals are used in photocells.

Common mistakes and connections: Students confuse the work function (surface property of a solid) with ionization energy (gaseous atom), though they are similar in meaning. Also, electrons from deeper below the surface need more energy than phi. It is the energy intercept in the Einstein photoelectric equation.

Visualization of Work Function

Work functions of metals range from about 2.1 eV for cesium to 5.65 eV for platinum, setting the minimum photon energy to release an electron. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

If the work function is 2.3 eV, a photon must carry at least 2.3 eV, corresponding to a wavelength below about 540 nm, to eject an electron.
