In-depth explanation of Copolymers

Copolymers are polymers made from two or more different monomers, which allows properties to be tuned between those of the homopolymers. The monomer units can be arranged randomly, alternately, in blocks or as grafts, and each arrangement gives different physical behaviour. Styrene-butadiene rubber combines a stiff segment with a flexible one, and ABS combines acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene for toughness and rigidity. Block copolymers can self-assemble into nanoscale domains. Copolymerisation is an important design tool in materials science.

Going deeper: Copolymers

Key ideas: Made from two or more different monomers, arranged randomly, alternating, in blocks or as grafts. Examples: SBR rubber (styrene plus butadiene), ABS plastic (acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene), nylon 6,6 (strictly an alternating condensation copolymer), Saran (vinylidene chloride plus vinyl chloride). Properties are tunable by ratio and sequence.

Common mistakes and connections: Mistake: treating a copolymer as a blend; monomers are covalently bonded in the same chain, a blend only mixes separate polymers. Block copolymers can self-assemble into nanostructures. Links to polymer design, rubber vulcanization and smart materials.

Visualization of Copolymers

A typical ABS composition. Acrylonitrile adds rigidity and chemical resistance, butadiene adds toughness and styrene adds processability. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

ABS plastic, made from acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene, is used to make LEGO bricks.
