RNA is usually a single-stranded polymer built from ribose instead of deoxyribose, and it contains uracil in place of thymine. Messenger RNA, or mRNA, carries the copied genetic message from DNA to the ribosome, where its codons are read in sequence. Transfer RNA, or tRNA, folds into a cloverleaf shape with an anticodon that matches a codon and carries the corresponding amino acid. Ribosomal RNA forms the catalytic core of the ribosome and catalyses peptide bond formation. Small regulatory RNAs such as microRNA and siRNA bind target messages to control gene expression.
Key ideas: mRNA carries the coding sequence, tRNA (about 75 to 90 nucleotides, cloverleaf with an anticodon) delivers amino acids, rRNA forms the ribosome catalytic core. Others include snRNA for splicing, miRNA and siRNA for gene silencing. RNA uses ribose and uracil, is usually single stranded, and is less stable than DNA because of the 2 prime hydroxyl.
Common mistakes and connections: Mistake: saying RNA is always single stranded and unfolded; it forms hairpins and complex 3D shapes, as in tRNA and ribozymes. Uracil replaces thymine. mRNA vaccines use modified nucleosides to avoid immune detection. Links to transcription, translation and CRISPR guide RNA.
Approximate share of total cellular RNA. Ribosomal RNA is most abundant, tRNA carries amino acids, and mRNA is a small but vital fraction. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.
