In-depth explanation of Covalent Bond

A covalent bond forms when two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons so that each achieves a more stable electron configuration. The shared electron density sits between the two nuclei, where it is attracted to both, and this holds the atoms together. Covalent bonds are directional because orbitals overlap in specific orientations, which gives molecules definite shapes and bond angles. Bonds form most readily between nonmetals with similar electronegativities, and the sharing is equal in homonuclear bonds such as H2 and Cl2. Covalent compounds are typically gases, liquids or soft solids because their molecules attract one another only weakly.

Going deeper: Covalent Bond

Key ideas: Predict a covalent bond between two nonmetals and count shared pairs to satisfy octets: bonds needed equals 8 times the number of atoms needing an octet, minus total valence electrons, then divided by 2. Bond order of 1, 2 or 3 sets length and strength. Covalent bonds are directional, which is what gives molecules their shapes.

Common mistakes and connections: People confuse covalent substances with molecular ones: diamond and quartz are covalent yet form giant networks with very high melting points. Another mistake is assuming sharing is always equal. Connects to bond polarity, valence bond theory, hybridization and intermolecular forces.

Visualization of Covalent Bond

Two hydrogen atoms share one electron pair, giving each a filled 1s shell. The shared density between the nuclei holds the molecule together. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

In Cl2 each chlorine atom contributes one electron to the shared pair, giving both atoms a full octet.
