In-depth explanation of sp3 Hybridization

sp3 hybridization mixes one s orbital and three p orbitals on a central atom to make four equivalent hybrid orbitals. Each hybrid has 25 percent s character and 75 percent p character, and the four point toward the corners of a regular tetrahedron with angles of about 109.5 degrees. The model describes saturated carbon with four single bonds and also nitrogen and oxygen bearing lone pairs, as in ammonia and water. Hybrids of this type form strong sigma bonds that underlie organic chemistry. The 109.5 degree angle is the ideal value for tetrahedral electron geometry.

Going deeper: sp3 Hybridization

Key ideas: Applies to steric number 4: carbon in alkanes, N in NH3 and NH4+, O in H2O, ethers and alcohols. C-H bond from sp3 carbon is about 109 pm and C-C is 154 pm. The more s character, the more electronegative the carbon: sp3 25 percent, sp2 33 percent, sp 50 percent, which also explains acidity of C-H (alkane pKa 50, alkene 44, alkyne 25).

Common mistakes and connections: Do not assume that all four hybrids must have identical bonds if substituents differ, nor that a lone pair must stay unhybridized. Another mistake is claiming that sp3 gives exactly 109.5 degrees in water or ammonia. Links to alkane conformations, rotation about sigma bonds and VSEPR.

Visualization of sp3 Hybridization

Each carbon in ethane is sp3 hybridized, forming four sigma bonds at tetrahedral angles, including the central C-C sigma bond. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Each carbon atom in ethane is sp3 hybridized and bonded to four neighbouring atoms.
