In-depth explanation of Carbon Family

Group 14 comprises carbon, silicon, germanium, tin and lead, each with four valence electrons in the ns2 np2 configuration. The family changes from nonmetallic carbon through the metalloids silicon and germanium to the metals tin and lead. Carbon is unique because it forms very strong C-C bonds, allowing the long chains that underpin organic chemistry. Most compounds are tetravalent, but the +2 state becomes more stable down the group, so Sn2+ and Pb2+ are common. Lead(IV) oxide is a strong oxidant, while tin(II) chloride is a common reducing agent.

Going deeper: Carbon Family

Key ideas: Group 14 ns2 np2: C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb. Metallic character increases down; C and Si are nonmetals, Ge is a metalloid, Sn and Pb are metals. Catenation is greatest for C because the strong C-C bond (348 kJ per mol) is stronger than Si-Si (about 226). Stability of +2 increases down (Pb2+ stable, Pb4+ oxidizing) from the inert pair effect. Carbon cannot expand its octet, unlike Si.

Common mistakes and connections: Students think CCl4 hydrolyzes like SiCl4; carbon has no available d orbitals and is also sterically shielded, so CCl4 does not hydrolyze. Another error is considering tin only metallic; gray tin is semiconducting. Connects to allotropes, silicon chemistry and the inert pair effect.

Visualization of Carbon Family

Electronegativity from C to Si: carbon (2.5) and silicon (1.9) show the drop down Group 14 from nonmetal to metalloid. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Lead(IV) oxide oxidizes concentrated hydrochloric acid to chlorine: PbO2 + 4HCl giving PbCl2 + Cl2 + 2H2O.
