In-depth explanation of Zone Refining

Zone refining produces extremely pure metals and semiconductors by moving a narrow molten zone slowly along a solid bar. A heater melts a short section, and as the zone moves, impurities that are more soluble in the melt than in the solid are carried toward one end. Repeating the pass many times concentrates the impurities at the end, which is then cut off. The method works because each impurity has a different solubility in the liquid and solid phases. It is used to produce ultra-pure silicon, germanium and gallium.

Going deeper: Zone Refining

Key ideas: A narrow molten zone sweeps slowly along a rod of impure material. Impurities are more soluble in the melt than the solid (distribution coefficient k below 1), so they travel with the zone to one end, which is cut off. Repeated passes reach purity 99.9999999 percent. Used for Si, Ge, Ga, B and As for semiconductors. Heating is done by induction coil or circular heater under inert atmosphere to avoid oxidation.

Common mistakes and connections: Students believe the pure metal melts and impurity solidifies; the reverse is true when impurities lower the melting point. If k is greater than 1, impurities move opposite to the zone. Materials must be stable upon melting. Links to phase diagrams, colligative melting point depression and semiconductor doping.

Visualization of Zone Refining

After passes of the molten zone, impurities concentrate at one end of the rod (right), which is cut off to leave the rest ultra-pure. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Passing a molten zone along a germanium rod many times concentrates the impurities at one end, leaving most of the rod extremely pure.
