In-depth explanation of Effect of Surface Area

In heterogeneous reactions the reaction occurs at the interface between a solid and a fluid, so the rate depends on the exposed surface area of the solid. Breaking a solid into a fine powder greatly increases the number of surface sites available for collisions, and this speeds up the reaction roughly in proportion to the increase in area. Surface area effects are especially important for dissolving, combustion and catalytic reactions on solid particles. A fine dust suspended in air presents a very large surface area, so it can burn rapidly and even explode, which is the basis of dust explosion hazards in grain mills and coal mines.

Going deeper: Effect of Surface Area

Key ideas: Cutting a cube of side L into cubes of side L/n multiplies total area by n, so a gram of a solid with 1 micron particles has about 1000 times the area of 1 mm pieces. Rates of reactions at a surface are proportional to exposed area when diffusion does not limit. Porous catalysts have internal areas of hundreds of square metres per gram.

Common mistakes and connections: Students apply the effect to homogeneous solutions, where there is no surface to enlarge, or think that grinding changes the activation energy. It changes only the number of reactive sites and hence the effective frequency factor. Reactions can become diffusion-limited at high area. Visualization of Effect of Surface Area

Cutting 1 cm3 of solid into smaller cubes multiplies exposed surface from 6 cm2 to 6000 cm2, giving far more sites for reaction and a much faster rate. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Powdered zinc reacts with dilute acid much faster than a single lump of zinc of the same mass.
