In-depth explanation of Alcohols

Alcohols are compounds of the form R-OH, in which an OH group is bonded to a saturated carbon. They are classified as primary, secondary or tertiary according to the number of carbon atoms attached to the carbon bearing the OH group, which controls their oxidation and reaction behaviour. The O-H bond makes alcohols polar and allows them to form hydrogen bonds, and they are weakly acidic with a pKa of about 16 to 18. The alcohol can act as a nucleophile, as an acid, or as a substrate once the OH is converted into a good leaving group.

Going deeper: Alcohols

Key ideas: Classified as primary, secondary or tertiary by the carbon bearing OH. Methods: hydration of alkenes, reduction of carbonyls (NaBH4, LiAlH4), Grignard addition to carbonyls (formaldehyde gives primary, other aldehydes secondary, ketones tertiary), SN2 hydrolysis of halides. Reactions: oxidation, esterification, dehydration, conversion to halides, reaction with Na giving H2 and alkoxide.

Common mistakes and connections: Students forget that Grignard with esters gives tertiary alcohols with two identical groups added. Another error is believing alcohols are strongly acidic; pKa is about 16, similar to water. Links to the Lucas test, oxidation levels, ethers via Williamson synthesis and hydrogen bonding.

Visualization of Alcohols

Methanol is the simplest alcohol: a methyl group bonded to a polar O-H group that can hydrogen bond. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Methanol is highly toxic, while ethanol is the alcohol present in alcoholic beverages.
