Diazonium Salts
Reactive intermediates from aromatic amines used to make azo dyes.
Reactive intermediates from aromatic amines used to make azo dyes.
Diazonium salts have the general formula ArN2+ X- and are formed when a primary aromatic amine reacts with sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid at 0 to 5 degrees Celsius. They are unstable above about 5 degrees Celsius, where they decompose by losing nitrogen gas, so they are used immediately in solution. The diazonium group can be replaced by Cl, Br, I, CN or OH, in the Sandmeyer reactions, or can couple with phenols and amines to form azo dyes. Coupling produces a -N=N- bridge between two aromatic rings.
Key ideas: Aryl amines react with NaNO2 and HCl at 0 to 5 C to give arenediazonium chloride (ArN2+ Cl-), stable only at low temperature. Sandmeyer (CuCl, CuBr, CuCN) gives Ar-Cl, Ar-Br, Ar-CN; heating in water gives phenol; KI gives aryl iodide; HBF4 then heat gives the fluoride (Balz-Schiemann); H3PO2 removes the amino group. Coupling with phenols or anilines gives azo dyes.
Common mistakes and connections: Students warm the diazotisation, which decomposes the salt to phenol. Another error is thinking aliphatic diazonium salts are stable; they decompose to carbocations and N2 at once. Coupling occurs para to the activating group. The diazonium group carries N2, which leaves as extremely stable nitrogen gas, making ArN2+ a versatile intermediate for Sandmeyer and coupling reactions. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.
