In-depth explanation of Esterification

Esterification is the reaction of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol to form an ester and water, and it is catalysed by a strong acid such as sulfuric acid. The reaction is reversible, with the equilibrium written as RCOOH plus R'OH in equilibrium with RCOOR' plus H2O. The equilibrium can be pushed toward the ester by using an excess of one reactant or by removing water as it forms. In the Fischer method, the oxygen from the alcohol is retained in the ester, which is shown by isotopic labelling studies.

Going deeper: Esterification

Key ideas: Fischer esterification: carboxylic acid plus alcohol with concentrated H2SO4 catalyst gives ester plus water, reversible with Keq about 4 for ethanol and acetic acid. Shift forward with excess alcohol or by removing water (Dean-Stark, drying agent). Mechanism: protonated carbonyl, tetrahedral intermediate, loss of water. Labelling shows the alcohol oxygen is retained in the ester. Tertiary alcohols react poorly.

Common mistakes and connections: Students think the water oxygen comes from the alcohol; it comes from the acid OH. Another error is assuming the reaction goes to completion without a shifting method. Links to Le Chatelier, ester hydrolysis (the reverse) and acyl substitution.

Visualization of Esterification

Fischer esterification is reversible with K about 4 for acid and alcohol; removing water or using excess alcohol pushes it to ester. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Ethanoic acid reacts with ethanol under acid catalysis to give ethyl ethanoate and water.
