In-depth explanation of Colligative Properties

Colligative properties are properties of a solution that depend only on the number of dissolved solute particles and not on their chemical identity. The four main colligative properties are vapour pressure lowering, boiling point elevation, freezing point depression and osmotic pressure. They arise because solute particles reduce the tendency of solvent molecules to escape into the vapour or to form the solid. Colligative properties are useful for determining the molar mass of an unknown solute. They apply best to dilute solutions of nonvolatile solutes.

Going deeper: Colligative Properties

Key ideas: Four formulas: ΔP = x_solute P0, ΔTb = i Kb m, ΔTf = i Kf m, and Pi = i M R T. Use molality for the temperature effects and molarity for osmotic pressure. For electrolytes, include i. Typical use: determine molar mass of an unknown by measuring ΔTf of a known mass in solvent.

Common mistakes and connections: The usual error is thinking the identity of the solute matters; only the number of particles counts. Another is using molarity for freezing point depression, or forgetting i for salts. They hold only for dilute solutions; at high concentration they fail. Visualization of Colligative Properties

Colligative properties depend only on the number of solute particles: vapour pressure lowering, boiling elevation, freezing depression and osmotic pressure. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

Adding salt to icy roads uses freezing point depression, since the dissolved particles lower the temperature at which the water freezes.
