In-depth explanation of Energy Density

Energy density is the amount of energy stored per unit mass, called specific energy, or per unit volume, called volumetric energy density. It determines how practical a fuel or energy store is for transport and portable devices, since a vehicle must carry its energy source. Hydrocarbon fuels have very high energy densities compared with conventional batteries, which store energy chemically in a much less compact form. This difference explains why aircraft and long-distance vehicles still rely on liquid fuels. Improving energy density is one of the central challenges in battery and fuel development.

Going deeper: Energy Density

Key ideas: Specific energy is in MJ per kg and volumetric energy density is in MJ per litre. Hydrogen is very high by mass but very low by volume, while batteries are low by both, though efficient at delivery. Compare the complete system, including tanks and engines.

Common mistakes and connections: It is easy to overlook that the energy delivered depends on conversion efficiency, so a fuel cell or electric motor may beat a combustion engine despite lower stored energy density. Mass and volume metrics should both be checked.

Visualization of Energy Density

Volumetric energy density in MJ per litre: liquid hydrocarbons store far more per volume than hydrogen gas or batteries. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.

Worked example and use case

A typical lithium-ion cell stores about 0.9 megajoules per kilogram, while gasoline stores about 46 megajoules per kilogram.
