A Hess's law cycle diagram is a visual representation of two or more routes linking the same reactants and products. It is usually drawn as a triangle or rectangle, with enthalpy arrows along each path. Because enthalpy is a state function, the sum of enthalpy changes along one route equals the sum along the other, and this equality allows an unknown value to be solved for. Such diagrams make the sign and direction of each step easy to see, which reduces errors in multi-step calculations. They are standard tools in introductory and advanced thermochemistry courses.
Key ideas: Draw reactants on one corner and products on another, connect them with a direct arrow and with the indirect route through intermediates. Label each arrow with delta H, and equate the sums for both routes, taking care with the direction of arrows.
Common mistakes and connections: A common error is to add enthalpies against the direction of an arrow without changing the sign. Another is to omit stoichiometric multipliers. Diagrams are useful for Born-Haber cycles, formation cycles and combustion cycles.
Two routes join the same states: the direct route from elements to combustion products equals the route through ethane, so enthalpies add up. The interactive lesson shows this as a live animation or chart.
The formation of carbon dioxide directly from carbon can be compared with the two-step route through carbon monoxide, and both routes must give the same overall enthalpy.
